Orthodontics Q & A
Why should I see an orthodontist?
It’s common for parents to bring their teens into the orthodontist’s office to get started on orthodontic treatments as soon as possible after puberty begins. But adults sometimes need orthodontic straightening treatments, too. It might be time to see an orthodontist if you experience:
- Crooked teeth
- Difficulty chewing
- Difficulty flossing between teeth
- Crowding, possibly from wisdom teeth
With so many types of orthodontic braces available, you have plenty of treatment options for straightening your teeth once and for all.
Which dental braces are best?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all “best” type of braces for all patients. That’s why it’s essential to have a thorough evaluation, get recent X-rays, and discuss your desired outcome and any current issues with your orthodontist. One of the most popular types of straightening systems is Invisalign®.
This nearly invisible type of braces treatment involves wearing clear aligners to straighten your teeth: no wires, no unsightly front brackets. Although Invisalign can help you even if you have a minor overbite, underbite, or another complex issue, it isn’t for everyone.
Some patients need or prefer traditional wire and bracket types of braces. The team at Greenway Dental Group offers ceramic brackets and thin wires, so your braces blend in with your teeth and aren’t very noticeable.
How long do I need to wear braces?
During your orthodontic consultation at Greenway Dental Group, your dedicated orthodontist lets you know how long your treatment plan should last. Most patients need to wear their braces for 12-24 months for minor to moderate issues.
If you have a severe crossbite, crowding, or another complex dental issue, your treatment plan may last even longer. After you’re finished with your braces treatment, you’re likely going to need to wear a retainer.
Typically, you can choose between a traditional wire retainer or a clear retainer that you usually only wear at night. Custom retainers are often the best way to prevent future teeth shifting and to help your new, perfect smile last a lifetime.
