    Crown Q & A

Why do I need a crown?

A crown is a dental appliance that’s permanently bonded to your natural tooth to protect it. You might need a crown if you:

    • Have a root canal
    • Need a large amount of decay removed
    • Have a broken or cracked tooth
    • Experience unexplained tooth sensitivity

In some cases, crowns are purely cosmetic. For instance, if you have a tooth that is severely misshapen or extremely stained or discolored, a dental crown can restore your tooth.

    Are same-day crowns permanent?

Yes, same-day CEREC crowns are permanent, meaning you don’t need to have them replaced, as with a temporary crown. But a dental crown won’t necessarily last a lifetime. To get the most out of your crown, you need to brush and floss regularly, in addition to keeping up with professional exams and cleanings.

Although crowns themselves are artificial — made of ceramic or porcelain — your natural tooth underneath can decay. You can also develop gum disease, which can weaken your natural tooth’s structure. For these reasons, following recommended optimal oral hygiene care is essential.

In some cases, dental crowns do fall out. As long as your underlying natural tooth is healthy, your dentist can rebond it. But if the crown is broken, you might need to have another one made.

What is the process of getting a crown?

Getting a crown first starts with prepping your natural tooth. This can involve a root canal or decay removal, if necessary, in addition to shaping your tooth to form a platform for the crown. Once your tooth is ready, your practitioner coats your tooth with a specialized material and takes digital images.

The state-of-the-art CEREC system uses this information to create a permanent crown designed to fit in perfectly with the rest of your bite. Since the CEREC system is available onsite at Greenway Dental Group, your new crown is available in just a few minutes.

Once it’s ready, your dentist bonds the crown to your prepped tooth, makes essential adjustments, and files down any rough spots. You can leave the office the same day with your permanent crown. If needed, you can always schedule a follow-up visit if you need additional adjustments later on.

Schedule your same-day crown consultation and exam at Greenway Dental Group by calling the office, or by using the online booking feature.
